Bernadette Peters in the background. Way long time ago she was a guest on the Tonight Show when Steve Martin was guest host. They were or had been an item at that time. She sang this song, obviously (even to me) in reference to their relationship. He greeted her at the end of the song with "You had us all weeping". Rather crass.

I keep coming back - the most brilliant rendition of this song ever. Jeez it tears your heart strings. One can almost feel the total heartbreak that is inherent in the words of the song. Amazing interpretation. Brava Dame Judy. Brava.
