Ever wonder how letterpress printing works?

This is the second filmstrip in a series Alan hopes to complete on the various printing techniques in use today. Blending education with ideology, the filmstrip presents a run down of the different parts and processes of setting your type and printing via the letterpress with Philip Cheaney. Filmed at the Independent Publishing Resource Center in Portland, OR.

Edited and produced by Alan Lastufka. Cameraperson: Joe Biel. Music: Fugazi, imadethismistake and Geoff Shilling. Special thanks to Philip Cheaney. Distributed by http://www.fallofautumn.com

    Very cool!

I have a printing business in NY on Long Island and I found this very interesting. I still like the quality that comes from the good old fashion printing press.

Nice video and good explanation. Used to hear the expression 'mind your Ps and Qs' as a child, but never knew that the origins of it were in Letterpress Printing!

This won't let me respond to the video, so I have to piggyback on this post. I'm a letterpress printer and I have to correct something stated in this video. Em quads and En quads have nothing whatsoever to do with the width of an M or an N. An Em quad is a square space the same width as the height of the type. An En quad is half the width of an Em quad.

What kind if presses are you using? I've been trying to get my hands on a smaller, hand operated one instead of the massive, self operated ones.
