What the documentary doesn't tell you is that Halsey was completely deceived by the Northern force. It was only the sacrificial efforts of the jeep carriers and their escorts that convinced the Japanese that they were being attacked by a much larger force, enduced them to retreat, and saved the landing force.

See how high the Patrol boats rode in the water? That was the way they were designed but not how they would run if they were fully loaded. They would not be able to get up on the step.
