A look back at "Chinatown," written by Robert Towne, directed by Roman Polanksi and produced by Robert Evans. Film stars Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, John Huston.
"Most detective movies had been about about exotic falcons , about hiests, jeweles, wierd crimes of one kind or another... Water and power? That was unusual."

  • Faye Dunaway and Jack Nicholson were undoubtedly brilliant, but it angers me that John Huston's superb villain often goes overlooked. His performance is stunning, he was a great director and a great actor.

  • One fact that kind of gets lost in the origins of Chinatown is the influence of John Fante's novels. Robert Towne free admits to mining the novel 'Ask The Dust' for historical background and period grammar.

Of course, Towne later adapted the book into a motion picture.

  • Bobby Evans is fucking amazing. End. Of. Story.

  • @locatebob how you know he raped her? there is many young whores, and she probably wanted ...I know that someone who would rape child should be in jail..but he maybe didin't rape her..Anyway its sick to have sex with that young teenage..but he could be on drugs..and ye maybe its not excause..but anyway why you look at his personal life? He IS GREAT DIRECTOR.ONE OF THE BEST. end of story...and sure director is not everything..I mean actors make this film great ,but becouse of Polański ideas.

  • REALLY scary to think of this movie with Ali MacGraw in the role of Evelyn. Thank god she left producer Robert Evans by then, as he was first developing the project with her in mind (!!!!!!)

  • I always felt Chinatown was the best Raymond Chandler to ever come to

the screen: his ghost haunts the film, but could be I am very wrong. Dunno.

  • @castaway50 I thought the expression had to do with the corruption in Chinatown.

  • I did get to work with John Huston for a few days late in his life on Annie. He was awesome even though he was on oxygen. I was an extra on the movie and he said something very nice to me.

  • @tool619 The phrase "In Chinatown, you do as little as possible"--it is referring to the JJ Gittes character recalling his days working vice in Chinatown. Because of the language barrier when interacting with the Chinatown denizens, Gittes never felt he could tell if in doing his policework, he was preventing crimes from being committed or aiding and abetting them. Hence his mantra of doing "as little as possible".

  • I love how Robert Evans' interview looks COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the interviews with Towne and Polanski. He's ridiculous haha

  • I still dont get the phrase " In Chinatown, you do as little as possible" or something along that line. Anyone who watched the movie and understood it??
