Since you requested names, I studied with Charles Greenlee, Tony Lada and Phil Wilson, and have played with Slide Hampton, Steve Turre and Delph Marsalis. (Delph was third, I was lead, if that makes a difference to you; to me, it was logical at the time, he's a better jazzer but I was a better lead player.) All these cats will agree with me on this: Flash is shit. Work on being a dependable, accurate and consistent player. Let the rest come.

I totally agree with you... consistency and accuracy, tone quality, clarity and technique go first hands down...
chops develop over time... and like any muscle, or tissue in your body, you would not want to overwork it to the bruising point...
rather than trying to squeak your way up, it would be great all the notes in your range have good tone right?
higher notes all come in due time...
