♔ Spoonman: Artis and the Kelp Horn ("Neptune")

Filmmaker Jeffrey Gold edited his travel footage for this short expose of Artis the Spoonman and the horn instrument he created by drying a stipe (stalk) of bull whip kelp with the pneumatocyst (bulb) serving as the bell. The video was shot on September 24, 2009 with a Canon PowerShot SD960 IS Digital Elph in its native format of 1280x720 HD with mono sound. The award-winning documentary Pigweed Philosopher: The Untethered Zen of Kimball Johnson had been invited to screen at the Port Townsend Film Festival in Port Townsend, Washington in September 2009, so executive producer Jeffrey Gold traveled there with the documentary film crew: director, Gabriel Lakey, composer Vince Lauria, and the film's subject, Kimball Johnson. In fact, Kimball Johnson can be seen in the background in a few scenes with Artis. Director Gabriel Lakey and composer Vince Lauria are also in the footage. Artis the Spoonman was featured in an early 90s Soundgarden music video entitled "Spoonman." An affable fellow, we liked him a lot. Check out some of the other videos featuring Spoonman on YouTube.
