She went down last October in a pouring driving rain.
The skipper, he'd been drinking and the Mate, he felt no pain.

  • @Garrettk41 You'r right of course. I thanked the wrong man! The rest I stand over 100%.

  • @Horsemarine100 This was written by Stan Rogers, not Dave Mallett.

  • One of the most inspiring songs I know. Thanks to Dave Mallett for writing it and the Clancys for singing it. It should be the new Irish National anthem: Rise again! Rise again, though your heart m,ay be broken or your life about to end, No matter what your loss, a love, a home, a friend, like the Mary Ellen Carter, Rise again!

  • I had the pleasure of seeing Makem and Clancy in concert a number of times. And Tommy would always recite the last verse and chorus before they sang this song, as a reminder to pay special attention. And when that verse came around, everyone would be shouting along: "Rise again!" Grand memory.

  • @jsdwyer when buzzovenite said "two of the best (unless i'm mistaken) they meant Makem & Clancy

  • thank god for the irish...

  • Ah the words on this are never more appropriate than now,.....with the world crashing around so many good people...there is always hope that like the Mary Ellen Carter we will rise again...two great singers who have sadly exited life's stage together with a great writer in Stan RIP.

  • Love this song and I like both the Clancy version and Stan Rodger's. What a treat to have both versions. Now we don't have to choose just one

  • My favorite song -- ever!
