TVW Channel 7 in Perth, Western Australia
1973 - State File begins. Number 96 is broadcast by TVW. A Seven team travels Australia to make a special on American country singer Johnny Cash for broadcast across Australia and the U.S. What In The World started of which 320 episodes were made until production ceased in 1979. It was sold to 12 TV stations throughout Australia, was shown in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and won a Sammy award as best children's series in Australia.
1974 - Cyclone Tracy wreaks havoc in Darwin killing 49. Nixon resigns. The opening of the Perth Entertainment Centre. Perth girl Randy Baker is named Miss Australia in a TVW7 telecast shown live across Australia. Sandy Palmer takes over hosting Stars of the Future when Carolyn Tannock (Noble) became pregnant with her fourth baby.
1975 - Colour television made an appearance in 1975 using the European PAL colour TV standard. TVW organises it's first Birdman Rally. Stars of the Future wins its fourth Logie Award. Maree Van Maaren joins Seven as children's hostess and wins a Logie as best female personality in WA.
1976 - Mao Tse Tung, the Chinese revolutionary leader dies. Seven's Letterbox goes to $50,000 in prizes. Perth and the Eastern States finally are linked by a sealed road and TVW's coverage of the opening ceremony puts the station in the Guinness Book of Records for the longest overland OB link. The Young Writers' Award is launched by TVW.
1977 - Elvis Presley dies. The VFL Grand Final was shown by Seven live for the first time in 1977. Seven held onto the rights until 2001. Tony Barber hosts Family Feud. Fat Cat and Friends begins. The Telethon Foundation is established and an era of research is assured. Newsreader Peter Waltham wins a Logie as best male personality in WA. TVW7's car is first Australian entry home and fifth overall in the second London-to-Sydney marathon.
1978 - Bob Hope 90 minute special Down Under at the Perth Entertainment Centre. It's the year of three Popes" Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I and Pope John Paul II. The horrific mass suicide at Jonestown in Guyana where 914 die. Sydney Hilton bombing kills two. Mike Willesee on Seven. Birdman rallies at Yancep Sun City. Ric Ardon joined Seven as a news reporter. Watts and Martin became Starmakers on Seven. Fred MacMurray and Britt Eckland appear for the Australian Film Industry awards. TVW backs the $250,000 Australian Derby. The State's top football award is renamed the Channel Seven Sandover Medal.
1979 - Western Australia's 150th anniversary of white settlement and TVW7 is deeply involved, starting with the spectacular opening concert. Miss Universe pageant comes to the Perth Entertainment Centre. A new award is announced for Young Ballet Dancers. Margaret Thatcher becomes UK Prime Minister. The Shah of Iran leaves. Egypt signs a peace treaty with Israel. The Australian drama Cop Shop. Commercial television stations now required to screen 'C' classified programming, aimed solely at children aged 6 to 13, every weekday between 4pm and 5pm. Early 'C' classified programs on Seven include Stax and Shirl's Neighbourhood. Commercial stations are also required to screen a minimum of 30 minutes each weekday, prior to 4pm, of programming aimed at pre-school viewers.
1980 - TVW7 turns 21. The young photographers award is introduced. John Lennon shot dead. It was the year of the Moscow Olympics boycott as the Seven network broadcast the games live via satellite. TVW presented the World Professional Ballroom Dancing Championships. Seven also premiered the long running shows Wheel Of Fortune, A Country Practice and Sons and Daughters in 1981/82.
1981 - Sir James Cruthers retires as Chairman of TVW Channel Seven and is replaced by Robert Holmes a' Court. The wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer is televised on ABC and every commercial television station in Australia. President Reagan was shot, but not seriously. A dingo takes Lindy Chamberlain's baby. The first space shuttle is launched. 96fm Stereo becomes Perth's first commercials FM radio station.
