For what it's worth, something needs to be done to coordinate the efforts of storm chasers, local media (TV and Radio), and the National Weather Service... Maybe a designated frequency on communication devices that can be monitored (similar to fire, police, and ambulance). The storm chasers knew what was going on, the radio stations did not, the other TV stations did not, and ultimately, many of the citizens of Joplin did not know what was coming. A method of getting everyone together is needed.

@flyfisherman1997 Yes Im an atheist. Brilliant deduction. god is forgiving?? REALLY?? What say you to the 160+ mostly christian people who he did not forgive that day. Or to those still suffering from injury, or who had their homes destroyed. Or to me, the godless heathen who flipped the bird at the sky as your gods wrath passed me by. I was spared?? It all seems so random and meaningless doesnt it?
And just to be clear, I do not "doubt the lord", I reject the notion of its existence outright.

@PelicanGuy The official report indicated that some people indeed didn't heed the warnings, but I'd say the biggest cause was simply that you had an exceptionally intense tornado heading through a very populated area, and wrapped in rain to top it off. Even if everyone heeded warnings, to be honest, not many structures are going to survive 250+ mph winds.
Plus, Joplin did have SOME warning time, but the tornado rapidly intensified into a monster just before hitting the city.

did the station get hit? anybody know?

Lived thru it..
Still gives me the chills to watch it

@PelicanGuy I know what you mean about taking tornado warnings seriously, my parents just don't care. One time they just sat in the garage with the doors open, and it was about 22 miles way.

@nanerrat as much as i hate to admit it, you are right Flyfisherman1997. I believed as a child, but as i grew up in life, more and more, I don't believe. I think the more intelligent you are the more you don't believe. that is a fact. cause it takes a lot to comprehend.

This iou s pretty good footage dude.

The tornado was pure evil. It hid itself in the rain, was not strong then BOOM it was EF5 in the blink of an eye.
-
@DeanyJeany Tornado sirens didnt mean anything to you?
-
@pelicanguy: and honestly, joplin didn't have much of a warning at all. everything happened unbelievably fast, and the fact that it was wrapped in rain didn't help much. within five minutes was pretty much the time span from the first tornado warning to the actual tornado hitting town.
