  • Now THATS how you are supposed to play music on the drums, this type of great playing is foriegn to guys that only appreciate senseless chops all over the place. I love how Ari is able to play the melody on his toms, he is a complete musician!!!!

  • People who say that this is a bad way to approach drumming are idiots. The people who say that it's pointless, they're idiots. Melodic (MUSICAL) drumming is what every player should strive for. If you need that explained to you, then you're an idiot.

  • @trufiend138 You misunderstand me!

Mr Hoenig is fantastic, I don't mean any disrespect, nor do I meant to be in any way disparaging about the way he plays, nor anyone who tries to do this kind of stuff.

But look, if you get called in to do a session, recording a straight up and down pop tune, then what sort of drumming are you gonna be doing?

There are very, VERY few scenarios that call for this kind of musical exploration, ESPECIALLY if you wanna earn the kinda money you need to make a living

  • @dannybrickwell you sound like a mediocre turd.."Ari Hoenig has the luxury.." its called developed skill and BALLS to experiment..Ari is human...stop making excuses for yours and all the other lame dick musicians who are hobbyists at best (including myself but I dont delude myself tho HE wouldn't be near as happy doing anything else, where as im fine not being a fulltime player)..

  • @Mapex101 It would be a bad way to approach drumming in most scenarios. "Melodic" drumming isn't trying to create a literal, toned melody.

The reality is that in most situations, as a drummer, you're going to be taking more care of the rhythm than anything else.

Ari Hoenig has the luxury of being able to do things like this solo, and as a successful band leader - luxuries not all of us can afford throughout most of our careers as musicians.

  • I've saw this guy live a few times years ago and he blew me away every time. Awesome player.

  • I don't like it, maybe in 1920 it would have been a great step forward but nowadays it sounds silly to me.

  • @Jazzdrum1210 Pretty sure it's a Yamaha Stage Custom 22", 10" and 14" toms

  • I see a lot of guys try to do a similar thing like this, bending pitches on the drums to make "notes". The thing that separates these guys from Ari is that they seem to do it more as a trick, a "cool drum thing". When Ari does it he actually achieves the note, and knows exactly how to get each pitch out of each drum. What's especially incredible is that he can get the pitch perfectly AGAIN when he refrains the melody, proving he knows where it is. All while swinging hard. What a joy to watch!

  • Now I am an Ari Hoenig fan. Beautifully conceived and played, congratulations!

  • Creative, masterful and inspiring!

  • what drum set is that?
