By Mrs Rockdoctor:
I began the "Your Baby Can Read" program with my 15 month old. It took 6.5 months, and consisted of watching one of five, 30 minute dvd's everyday. I watched them with her, usually on my lap with my arms around her. The dvd's are fun and have vivid pictures, actions, songs, and poems and feature the written word throughout. We did not use word cards at all during this time.

After a break for summer (May through August), I decided to introduce some of the words she saw in the dvd's on word cards. She learned 3 words the first night, 8 words the next day, and is now upto 25 words after 18 days.

The premise of the program is that babies have a critical window of opportunity to learn language with ease at a very young age (the first 4 years), and after that the window diminishes greatly. Not to say your child will not learn language after that, but they will not learn it with such ease, and potentially will miss making thousands of important connections in the brain that will be the foundation for all future learning. It is proven that the wider vocabulary a child has the better reader they will become. This 'new' research (1997), presented in "Your Baby Can Read" program, raises the question "Why do we (in North America) wait until a child is 5 to begin to teach them to read?".

  • Hey Diana

My husband pressed send when I wasnt finished!!!

As I was saying I used YOur Baby Can Read DVD series over 7 months. She loved this because I cuddled her on the couch and interacted with her during this time once per day. After the 5 dvd's (about 7 months) I introduced the word cards.

  • Congrat for the nice work! My baby boy is 6 months old and I want to start learning the alphabet. Are u so kind to give me more details about the method you hav used to learn reading the little one?

Thank you very much! and keep on going with the great work you're doing with your baby!

    Hi DianaLeila

Great to hear from you! I am glad you enjoyed that video of my 25 month old reading.

Here is the best advice I can give you. Your Baby LOVES to Learn; and Loves spending time with YOU!

So your baby will be thrilled to take in anything you want to teach.

I used Your Baby Can Read

Whole Word Recognition is best (I think) to teach first; so teaching the alphabet song is fine, (just sing it often)but their sounds, phonics, comes later (2.5ish)

However, if I were to do it again, I would read Glenn Doman's books, starting with "How to Teach Your Baby to Read" and begin with the word cards right away.

Baby's need to be presented with large font to read. THey can easily internalize 100's of words before they are one year old. Before they can talk. They can just point to the object the word represents to prove they understand it (ie nose, or mommy).

  • cute girl ! my son did the same thing at age 2--but he had 19 or 20 videos that I recorded and wrote the names on them and he knew which one was which--one day it hit me--how can he know out of 20 videos?? He knew the alphabet at age 2 also but he learned all of this on Sesame Street--I did not use a program-- but music also does the same thing at an early age -my son started piano at age 3.. they are like little sponges at that age-keep up the good work --!!!!
