Park Forest Police Stand Off

Police response at Park Forest townhomes March 15, 2009 12:34 PM | No Comments Police from several south suburban departments converged on a townhouse complex in Park Forest this morning in response to a report of a man with a gun, witnesses said. Officers wearing SWAT-style gear and armed with rifles appeared focused on a group of homes on the west side of Western Avenue at Dogwood Street, the witnesses said. The situation began about 8 a.m. and ended about 11:15 a.m., when police put a man in the back of a squad car, said Janelle Elmore-Perkins, who lives in the area. She said police told her this morning to stay inside because "there's a man with a gun." After she saw them taking a man into custody, she said, officers told her it was safe to leave her home. Elmore-Perkins said she saw police vehicles from Homewood, Burbank and Chicago Heights, as well as the Cook County Sheriff's Police and the Park Forest police. Another witness, Steve Barnett, said police blocked off Western for several blocks, but Elmore-Perkins said traffic was moving along the road by noon. Park Forest police did not immediately respond to a request for information. -- Staff report
