Deep end... I can't type on a touch screen worth a crap.

He did this all on a 4 track in his apartment. He has said on a few occasions that he isn't particularly proud of this album. He was most certainly doing smack at this time and really went off the deepens here and with Smile from the streets. He talked about ghosts and playing colors and all kinds of weird shyt. Hendrix was definitely a huge influence. Neil Young isn't even in the same universe, imho.

I got this when it came out and was blown away.

I hear Niel Young all over this song

I pretty cool that John dedicated the record to Flea's daughter Clara

john said he wasnt addicted to heroin until after niandra lades. yea he's high and pot and cocaine maybe but the hardcore heroin didnt come till Smile From The Streets You Hold.

@chrisrave But that said, Niandra Lades is just super-original and different sounding, and it's hard to find any influence (in terms of sound) that Frusciante is actively trying to mimic anywhere on the album. It's just too much its own thing. Seriously who the fuck would write Untitled 12? Genius stuff though.

@chrisrave It's kind of hard to explain, it does but it doesn't. Or rather, it does in the same way Hendrix's music resembled traditional blues. I play a lot of Hendrix and a lot of Niandra, and if you play them, you can see the melodic and chordal similarities. It's just there's a different emotional emphasis, and a few outside notes that kinda come out of left field that make it sound really different. The intro to this song in particular is very Voodoo Chile when you play it.

@chrisrave I'm no music expert, but my opinion is that you can hear the Hendrix influence here. John's guitar playing is almost always melodic instead of chordal. That's one of the things that Hendrix was known for.

I understand that this music was recorded during the BSSM era. Figuring Hendrix-esque guitar work was a HUGE influence on John during this era, I find it interesting that the great music ideas on this album don't really contain Hendrix-esque licks nor bluesy stuff. Anyone disagree? Agree? Any input?
To find good music these days, you have to be prepared to look. Good music is no longer an effortless discovery. A person can't be lazy if they want to hear beauty in a true sense, it's something that needs chasing and searching, but that really can make it more rewarding when you find something of this caliber. People forget that music can still be pure and is still pure, but it needs to be uncovered. Or, you could just make it yourself.

Seriously if I ever become a famous rock star, I'm going to mention this album in every interview. Work it into the collective unconscious of society, build it up long term, you know?
FUCK IT BETTER IDEA. If I ever become become president, Your Pussy's Glued To A Building On Fire will be my victory song.
