not really. That is used as an example of why the vault was changed, but as you may have noticed, vault accidents have decreased significantly since they began using the table. (And Elise Ray wasn't even nearly the only one with a fall Sydney's AA). A table gives them more surface to block on, so they are less likely to miss it.

After the 2000 Olympics when they horse was too short, they change to the table cause it's safer. It's longer and wider, so there's more of a surface for the gymnasts to block from.
