There are no contradictions in the bible. If maybe you read the other verses and not just that one verse it would open things up. Do your research instead of just listening to what people say.

Obviously the translators didn't mess up, since they would have noticed 2 Chr 21:20. All the Hebrew manuscripts say 22 and 42, so it's not a translation or copyist issue.
The answer is that Kings depicts events from man's view, and Chronicles depicts it from God's view. Ahaziah was 22 years old when he began to reign, and the dynasty starting from Ahab was 42 years old. To know this for sure, simply trace the number of years starting with Ahab.

My information comes from the Matthew Henry Bible commentary.

Actually, this would have been quite common in instances when the King was unable to reign and someone else, in this case his mother, effectively reigned for him. Because he was still technically King, his name was put down, but because his mother made all the decisions, her age was put down.
2 Chronicles 22:2 is not talking about his mother, it is talking about the same person. The correct answer is 22. In 2 Chronicles 22:2, it is a copyist error which the Christian scholars admit based on the manuscripts, because writing numbers down back then, was done by writing them out word by words, instead of the shorter way.

I am aware that it is talking about the same person, but his mother's age would have been given as it was she who was making all the decisions for him. He only had the title of 'King'.
