Obama picks Joe Biden as vice president...At 3:00 AM!

The eagerly anticipated text message arrived on millions of mobile phones yesterday at 3am. With it, many Americans who had registered to be updated with details of Barack Obama's presidential campaign will have been woken to the news that Joe Biden, the Delaware senator, will be his running mate on the Democratic party's ticket.

Many of them will have got the joke. In the brutal primaries, Hillary Clinton's most effective ad showed a phone ringing at 3 am - and asked who Americans would trust to answer it in the Oval Office. In picking Biden at 3am, Obama was telling the world that he had chosen a No 2 able to take over in a crisis.

Barack Obama named Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice presidential running mate early Saturday, balancing his ticket with a seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues.

Obama announced the pick on his Web site with a photo of the two men and an appeal for donations. A text message went out shortly afterward that said, "Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee."

Obama's decision leaked to the media several hours before his aides planned to send a text message announcing the running mate, negating a promise that people who turned over their phone numbers would be the first to know who Obama had chosen. The campaign scrambled to send the text message after the leak, sending phones buzzing at the inconvenient time of just after 3 a.m. on the East Coast.

This morning I was watching C-Span, and they had a guest and author named Peter Galbraith. He wrote a book called Unintended Consequences - How The War In Iraq Strengthened America's Enemies. I will certainly be promoting it. I think it is VERY important that this is documented before the coming election. When Obama gets into office, I want America to know that any attack that occurs against us is a direct result of our invasion of Iraq which occured on Bush's watch. Obama/Biden 2008
