With Odetta (Odetta Holmes) Belfonte performed this traditional folk song on May 2, 1960 in Carnegie Hall. This version appeared on his album, "Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall". A spadecaller video.

@nickwalco - uh, like I said before Henry is too lazy to do either one which is why there is only one bucket (the one with the hole). It is obvious that he is just making excuse after excuse to put off the work altogether.

Laugh myself silly every time I hear this version. Sounds like a typical marriage to me. I hear some version of this song every time I hear a really long term couple go round and round with an argument.

I have no idea if this is how it happened, but I get the impression that while he was out of sight as she called him, he was behind the barn using an awl to put the hole in the bucket in the first place. LOL
