B-Side from Beggars.

Lyrics:

I woke alone
In a mansion on a hill
Across the room
A red telephone
My mouth was dry
I felt I'd been asleep for years
I turned and I
Discovered then the sum of all my fears
What have I become?
Someone tell me that I'm dreaming
What have I become?
Someone wake me up!

Through the glass
The clouds were dark and harboured rain
The land below
Was gray and vast
And through the mist
I saw the fields were flush with graves
And each headstone
Was etched with lies discrediting the brave
What have I become?
Someone tell me that I'm dreaming
What have I become?
Someone wake me up!
What have I become?
Someone tell me that I'm dreaming
What have I become?
Someone wake me up!

Son, imitate death's true face
For who and what and why'd they have to die?
Son, imitate death's true face
For who and what and why'd they have to die?
Why'd they have to die?
Someone wake me up!

  • ...his own people, patriots in soldierdom, to their deaths in the name of ideology and profitability. Thus - "What have i become?"

Still, not really enough lyrics to work with. Cant really derive a solid meaning or purpose to the song. I think that is in part why they skipped it for beggars.

Amazing guitar work though, its kind of a shame that it didnt make the cut, really. One of my favorites from melody and narration alone. True fans will know it.

  • Its the US president, i think. He has a red telephone reserved for emergencies, the last thing anyone wants is to have to use it. The mansion, then, would be the whitehouse?

And that graveyard is the one reserved for the best soldiers, i think. The brave. You know the one i'm reffering to?

More however, i think that it is meant to evoke more general Political visuals, only referring to the red telephone as inspiration for the underlying concept.

A politician realizing he has sent his own patri
