Secret, Scandal, or Scholarship?
Ethical Dilemmas in Exploring the Edelson/Horwitz Murder Case
Monda Halpern is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at The University of Western Ontario. She specializes in nineteenth and twentieth-century North American women's history and Jewish history. The Edelson/Horwitz Murder Case took place in the Ottawa Jewish community in 1931. Although this shooting by a jealous husband occurred eighty years ago, researching the truth behind the story was made difficult by a close ethnic community who sought to silence the case, and act like it didn't exist. This talk will explore the reasons behind this silencing, and will consider the question: What happens when the illusions of the community and the goals of the historian are at odds?
