The first of four parts of my submission for the Life in a Day project produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Kevin McDonald.

I only learned about this project about a day before so I didn't have much time to put much thought into this otherwise I would have talked about being a foreigner in Japan and being an English Teacher. I couldn't even get the name right as I said "day in the life."

They don't want any editing on this submissions which was hard for me to do since normally I wouldn't show this without a lot of editing and reshoots. So anyway this is rough and unedited especially the parts where I was trying to inconspicuously film with the camera in the crook of my arm which caused some of the footage to come out at a crooked angle.

I broke up my submission into four parts to make it more digestable to viewer and uploader. The first part  as implied by the title is rather mundane with me going to work and going into a convenience store. I talk a little bit about the homeless, vending machines, and pachinko addicts. The second part is "Average Afternoon" about lunch and walking thru a train station. Not exactly riveting stuff but with the "Exciting Evening" part I was lucky to hit pay dirt with a Japanese festival and Tokyo Decadance.

Anyway, it's all rough and raw and this damn thing broke my uploader. Tried to upload it twice already in HD and it came out to twice as long as the original with the video and audio way out of sync while taking 15 years to upload. At this rate it'll take me to Christmas to get the rest up.

  • Fascinating stuff and so very different from my submission (except for the cat part). Thanks for showing it being fed! Thank you so much for providing this window into your part of the world. Is the gambling game something that is a problem for a lot of the Japanese? Also is the homeless population on the rise? We never hear anything about homeless people in Tokyo.

  • @wlssuccess They don't talk much about the homeless over here as far as I can tell but you can see lots of shanty shacks under bridges in different areas especially along Sumida River. It's not near as bad as some major cities elsewhere but it's there. Some of the homeless aren't so much as poor as they are mentally unstable.

As for stray cats many of them get feed by people. I think because many people can keep pets in their tiny apartments they kind of befriend the park cats as surrogates.

  • im curious, how did you shoot the convini part? like where did you have your camera?

  • @MrHiberto I had the camera on a sling around my shoulder and tried to hold in the crook of my arm at my elbow. Unfortunately it came crooked

  • @RoninDave ha thats cool i was just wondering if you were holding the camera straight into that cashiers face lol

  • @MrHiberto oh never! Although i like making videos I don't really like how people shove cameras around these days. I try to be inconspicuous or ask. Many people seem to shoot video the same way they take photos - just to do it but never look at it again

  • Im about to go to the Temple University of Japan to study, got any tips for me?

  • As the Singapore ex-Prime Minister Lee Kwan Yau says in his book, "Japanese people are gentle and polite on their outside, but cold-blooded and mentally sick on their inside." Even the benevolent Buddhist temple treated poor people as social outcasts and don't accept them to have shelter there. And modern school textbooks in Japan obscures the historical facts of Japanese crimes in WWII to make themselves "look good" to their own people. What a shame~

  • Poeple need to view this more! this is the perfect video on showing what life is like in japan !!

  • 私は新潟に住んでいる。漫画は最高です

  • Thx for the video -- I just wanted to point out that there is yogurt and fruit available at every 7-11 here in the 'states! Cheers! (^_^)

  • Great video! I thought how to make our message bold and easy discovered, especially for those with multipart submissions. I started a web site lifeinaday dot tv to help to bring this project participants to another level of creativity: say assemble a playslist and embed it at this web site with proper shooting text script. take a look!

  • cool cool stuff so interesting
