"Here We Go - Women Living the Strike!" is a unique documentary commemorating the role of women during the 1984-85 miner's strike and the subsequent impact this was to have on the following 20 years of their lives.

This unique film acknowledges the critical role that many of these brave, pioneering women undertook in standing up against the might of the British
government and how that struggle inevitably brought about changes in them.

Unique recollections from women of different backgrounds including archival footage of "Battle of Orgreave" , PM Margaret Thatcher, Mick McGahey and Arthur Scarghill, President of NUM.

Much has been written and filmed about the political angle of the strike and the men's views on it, but to date, very little has been recorded from the women's perspective. The 1984-85 strike was unique in that many women were moved by, not only the impact this was to have on their own lives, but their whole communities and inevitably their whole way of life. It roused a sleeping giant and proved to be the catalyst for many women to become involved in the year long battle in ways they had never imagined.

  • My Granny helped in the soup kitchen in Deal, Kent, feeding families who's money had disappeared through the seizure of the unions assets. She then went on to give her 1st ever public speech to a packed house in Gurton College, Cambridge while my Granddad, retired General Secretary of the Kent NUM listened and was awe-struck by the power of her. Deal has never recovered from the closure of the pits and let's face it, who would want to be a coal miner?? but then again it's better than nothing...

  • @pinkithinks This is an excellent example of how many of the women used their skills and went on to greater things. As you say - who would want to be a coal miner?? However, it seems the carmaraderie and the community spirit seems to be the thing that held everyone together and this is sadly missing now that communities have been fragmented.

  • What a load of crap. The strike committees were raiding the collections and were better of striking than working! then you had decent honest hard working men who wanted to work were bullied by fascist thugs! We were told communities would be destroyed lies damned lies!!

  • There are two sides to this story and your point is equally valid. Sadly, fascism was demonstrated on both sides, showing man's inhumanity to man. We hoped that stories would help us to move on. This documentary is about women. They didn't start the strike and had many differing opinions as to whether to support their husbands or the strike. This is what we wanted to explore. as regards communities - they are very much destroyed in many areas.

  • glory to wapc!!

  • These women , and all the thousands of women from every coalfield across the country who stood side by side with the men were the true heroine's of the strike . They endured a year of hardships , organized the soup kitchens , stood alongside the men on the picket lines and inbetween looked after and cared for thier children . Every one of them deserve a medal....Thank you ladies

  • Maggie Thatcher was a heroine. Not one of these Northern wenches can hold a candle to the great Iron Lady.
