    Kris Kristofferson already a star, discovered John Prine and got him signed in early 1970. Kris then released this song in 1972, before John released his ""Grandpa Was a Carpenter" in 1973. So it's not likely he borrowed John's melody, as this song sounds a whole lot like every other song Kris wrote before and after that, LOL. For a real treat, go listen to Darrell Scott's version of this from last year's Rhythm & Roots Fest in Bristol, VA/TN - it's awesome!

    No, it's "owed to John Prine" because it closely resembles the latter's "Grandpa was a Carpenter".
