I make something simular to this for my hair and body. If you don't have a double boiler, that is ok. Just boil you water in a kettle or something and then put that water in a bowl/pan larger or way smaller than the bowl you are mixing in. Cover with a towel for a little while while the Shea and Coco butter melt. This works like a champ. Microwaving the oil will reduce their properties. Hope this helps.

Can I ask Why? you put those precious oils into the microwave, doesn't that 'change' the molecular structure of the oils and de-nature their healthing attributes. . couldn't you use a double boiler to warm the oils?

The vitamins and GSE you mention as "natural preservatives" are not preservatives at all. They are anti-oxidants which help extend the shelf life of the oils and butters. They will not protect against microbes, molds, yeasts or bacterias (some you cannot see with your naked eye). To be safe an actual (tested and approved) preservative system should be incorporated or keep the lotion in the fridge and use within a week.
Ruby117able, the only risk would be if you're using harmful ingredients.

Hi Trish, I just wanted to ask, is there any dangers to making your own home made recipes? I'm wanting to know because I"m interested in making my own skincare (simple things like facial masks, later try lotions). I've been doing research on hazards of synthetic chemicals in commercial products, but I'm wondering if there are possible (but rare) side effects that can happen. Eg How can I know if the lotion I made is no longer good? At thispoint, i'm worried being an amateur i may put myself..

@ruby117able
You can use natural preservatives such as Vit E, Vit C or Grapeseed Extract. Do the research online to see what works for you. If the oils go bad you'll know by smelling them. I don't see how they could be harmful, just rancid and not smell good. Of course it all depends on what ingredients you use and how you care for it. I make sure my containers are perfectly washed and sanitized. If I have more than necessary I store in the fridge.
