This yirdaki has been in the iDIDJ Reference Collection and is the last and greatest instrument we have of senior Yolngu artist Mulkun Wirrpanda. Mulkun is the daughter of the great Dhudi-Djapu warrior and leader Dhakiyarr Wirrpanda, the subject of the critically acclaimed documentary "Dhakiyarr vs The King":

Mulkun has adorned this yirdaki with special artwork pertaining to a place called Yalata, near the Dhudi-Djapu outstation Dhuruputjpi. The designs are rendered in ochres (earth pigments) and are especially fine in their execution.

This is an outstanding musical instrument as well as an exquisite work of art. The maker of this yirdaki is none other than Mirarra' Burarrwanga, a young Gumatj man who has made a name for himself in the art of fine yirdaki craftsmanship.

This yirdaki is best described as 'old school'. It does not have as much acoustic elasticity as faster instruments from the Miwatj region, but it is precisely this that enables its air column to be 'popped' like instruments heard on old field recordings.

  • This is incredible playing!

  • Youniquetuber - I didn't know until a couple of months ago, that aboriginal females shouldn't play the didgeridoo-then I realized why I'd never seen a girl/woman play?I get goose bumps when I hear it, as I do with Gurrumul Yunipingu-what talent-sings like an angel? Why do the boys get the gorgeous long eye lashes?Do you have to breathe in and out at the same time?I heard Rolfe Harris say that once. There's an aboriginal man who plays with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra-he's awesome-writes the music

  • How does he get the zhoonk sound? I've had my didgeridoo for about two or three months and I still haven't figured that out. Please help. Thanx mate!
