"Bella Coola Totem Raising" Fredrick Lane, reporter.
The tradition of carving and raising of Totem Poles, first began among the coastal Bands of what is now northwestern British Columbia. Although many other Tribes and Bands have since adopted the idea, the Nuxalk Band has been raising Totem Poles since time immemorial. The 6,000 pound, twenty eight foot pole is moved and erected using able bodied human power.
