Zhang Sanfeng - the Patriarch of Tai Chi Chuan
Tai Chi has been practiced in China for hundreds of years. The Taoist monk Zhang San Feng (est. 1279 - 1386) who lived during the Song Dynasty is commonly venerated as the patriarch of Tai Chi Chuan though the origin of Tai Chi can be traced to several hundred years before Zhang. Zhang wasn't a monk in the conventional sense but rather a Taoist alchemist. He travelled around in seek of a true spiritual teacher before he eventually settled in Wu Dang Mountain in south-east China where he immersed himself in the Taoist internal alchemy practice. Tai Chi Chuan - the Supreme Ultimate Boxing - was the fruition of Zhang's years of diligent self-cultivation practice.
