The architectural brilliance of the residence, designed in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis, is complemented by a park-like landscape and a comprehensive collection of original decorative arts. Its noteworthy occupants included: former New York City mayor William Paulding, merchant George Merritt and railroad tycoon Jay Gould.

@blozier2006 - You are absolutely right! I got to visit the place when I attended the Dark Shadows Halloweenathon in October a number of years ago. It was fun to visit the nearby village of Irvington. Supposedly, Washington Irving is buried in one of the area cemetaries. I think the Tarrytown Hilton hosted that Dark Shadows event. But the best part of the estate, for me, was walking around on the grass, which is a special type shipped over from England(?)
