Jony Ive worked for Apple for two years before Steve came back in 1997. Steve was "cleaning out" all of the departments, looking for "A players". After several unsuccessful attempts at finding that person, he had a meeting at apple with the design staff informing them that they were being replaced. That is where he met Jony.
