Siege of Syracuse (196) starring Tina Louise, Rossano Brazzi and Sylva Koscina. Directed by the father of Peplums, Pietro Francisci.
What can I say about this uber grand romantic epic? It stars three fine movie stars in a sweeping (if a bit too episodic) story which has everything, including a love story, family tragedy, political warfare, science, dance, varied battles on land or sea. It also has that age-old plot point of amnesia. The direction is solid, the production values believable and the dialogue excellent. Though the quality of the image is bit too dark here I'm glad this is in Italian. It's sounds so much more fluid and better than if it had been dubbed with bored sounding English speaking voices.
The music, by Angelo Francesco Lavagnino, is appropriately sweeping and romantic.
The film is based on history but it's historically inaccurate. Archimedes was in his 70s when Syracuse was attacked. But then who wants to see a romantic movie with a leading man who's in his 70s? Archimedes was also killed when Romans successfully invaded Syracuse. But those deadly mirror weapons did exist. This almost sci-fi aspect always gives this film a cool edge few other Peplums have.
Enjoy!
