For Thy Soul's Salvation: Music for England's Monarchs
Recorded Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Mission Dolores in San Francisco, CA
In this video: Give Alms of They Goods (Christopher Tye), If Ye Love Me (Thomas Tallis), Our Father (John Sheppard).
In the 16th and 17th centuries, England's Stuart and Tudor sovereigns sought God's favor through this magnificent music composed for their Royal Chapels by the most prodigious composers - Fayrfax, Tye, Tallis, Sheppard, Byrd and Gibbons.
Often mistakenly thought of as a specific place, the Chapel Royal actually refers to a group of clergy and musicians who personally minister to the spiritual needs of the royal household. As such it was intended to reflect the heavenly majesty of God in the court of an earthly monarch. The Chapel Royal, mentioned as early in England's history as the late 13th century, also followed Henry V onto the field of battle at Agincourt. It perhaps reached the peak of its splendor during the period between the 15th and 17th centuries after Henry, a Welshman who was one of the two remote but legitimate possible contenders to the throne, defeated Richard III at Bosworth Field in 1485 and founded a dynasty in his name: Tudor.
