The above sentence is the first of the first speech of the Roman Cicero attacking the pretensions of Catiline coup against the established order in the then Roman Republic. The phrase is still used today when we want to express disapproval of an act or attitude that persists, despite being in a logical absurdity or callous stubbornness in the face of a reality that can not be ignored.
