This is a Memorial outside of the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC for the Victims of Smyrna Massacre committed by Kemalist Turks 85 years ago.

@kad85 Phrygians were Greek! They immigrated from Northern Greece to Anatolia. It's like saying Anatolia belonged to the Ionians. The name itself is the Greek word they gave to the region they settled. As for the Hittites, the Hittite empire stayed relatively south and east of Greek Asia Minor. They were more central Turkey than anything. The Greeks of the Ottoman Empire did not feel represented by the Ottomans and wanted independence, but of course the Turks had to draw first blood.

@ArgirisDean What do you say? Greek army came to Smyrna because Ottomans were exterminating Greeks?? I have never read such a wrong and ignorant claim. Greek Army came because of the sick "Megali Idea".. Purpose of Greeks was to occupy the whole Western Anatolia and exterminate Turkish majority living there. So that they would regain their so called "historic lands", which was once home to ancient civilizations such as Phrygians and Hittites not Greeks originally.

@kad85 - You forget to mention WHY the Greek Army came in. They came in because the Ottomans were systematically exterminating Greeks. Ottoman soldiers made my Great Aunt watch as they decapitated her neighbor and then proceeded to use his head as a soccer ball. Ottomans rounded up Greeks and sent them on death marches into modern day Iraq. To the day my aunt died her body bore the marks of Turkish weapons upon her skin...

I don't know what this lady says, I respect her and understand her pain that she probably forced to leave the city and maybe one of her relatives got killed... But she must also know the fact that Greek army occupied the city in 1919 and massacred Turks who had been living there for centuries, for instance my family. Greek troops occupied Izmir for 3 years and killed thousands of Turks and raped our women. WHY NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING ABOUT THIS? IF THIS IS HISTORY, YOU MUST TELL EVERYTHING.
