She was amazing. That's all I can say. All my hard work is paying off. I actually teared up a little bit after our last course.... not gonna lie. I'm so proud of her, I can't even express how proud. She really trusts me and we're starting to build "that bond." Shep Welles said he could probably help me get her lighter in the bridle if he could ride her a day or two.
At first I thought: Ok, that sounds good. Might have to take you up on that.
My second thought was: I really think I've been doing well with her myself, and I really want to do this myself. I don't know if Dizzie will trust him. He doesn't know her; he's not going to know when she's getting ready to spook, or whether she's going to want to take the long spot, or when she just needs to take a minute to stand and collect her thoughts, or that when she turns her head around it means that she wants a hug. I got a little defensive. It probably sounds really corny and stupid. But when you have or start to get a bond with your horses you understand them better, you can think ahead of them and know what they're going to do over this jump or in this corner of the ring and you can tell just by looking at their eye what kind of mood they're going to be in that day(very helpful with mares.) I strongly believe in the power behind a bond between a horse and rider, maybe a little too strongly at times or for some people's tastes. But hey, it's my opinion and my ride :)

On a training note: We haven't really been working on flying changes yet so we did all simple changes at this show. It was just to get her out somewhere and get her used to the showing environment. She was pretty high when I first got on but she settled down throughout the day and got better and better every ride. I didn't even expect to place. I was going into this thinking that I would have to trot into every line and really hold her back. COMPLETE OPPOSITE. I mean of course with the size of her stride I have to hold a little bit even on a forward line, but there were times where I could just maintain contact to her mouth, keep my leg on, and the distance was there with no problem or green horse "weaving." I think she knows that I'm going to help her out if I need to. We still have a long way to go though. Lots of fine tuning.

In other words.... Dizzie will now be going to some shows. Expect to hear the name "Distance" & Caroline Johnson very soon :)

  • I've watched this video like 5 times. Love it, love her, and love you. I'm so proud of you both! The song is amazing. I love the line, "It's the heart that really matters in the end". It's everything in a horse, a rider, and why we do this.
