Really symptomatic of wider problems in the US. Remember the "Gulf Syndrome"? The toxic health hazard of 9/11? Katrina?
It's indeed shameful. No wonder the US Army has to resort to - hm - unconventional recruitment methods in order to fill their ranks.
But this also points to the US media's shortcomings. One has heared barely anything about the WIAs. The media simply lets politicians get away with rhethorics unmatched by action.
It is amazing the level of criminal activity that our death dealing govt gets away with. Here we see the exact same reasons that Vietnam vets ended up on the streets of our once great nation, homeless. Support the troops? Never. Just send them off to die so you can make more money. Bush quote: "We owe them all we can give em." There is nothing left to give them W! You stole it all & gave it to your criminal friends.

"Oh its Tommy this and Tommy that and Tommy stay away!
But it's pleased to step aside sir, when the drums begin to play." Part of a poem written in England about a hundred or so years ago. It means kick the soldiers aside during peace time but put them out front when the war starts. It's an old old story whose time has come.
Tommy
By Rudyard Kipling, 1892
I went into a public- 'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls behind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins," when the band begins to play-
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you Mr Atkins," when the band begins to play...
