430 AD. The Roman Empire is beginning to crumble. The Vandals and other marauding tribes spill through the gaps in Roman defenses. And one of the greatest saints of the Christian church stands between his flock and the barbarian invaders. As he attempts to negotiate between the proud Roman authorities and the implacable Vandal king, Bishop Augustine recalls his own life before Christianity...

In this stirring and epic new film on the life of St. Augustine of Hippo, follow the great saint as he rises from his reckless days as a youth to his accomplishments as a renowned but dissolute orator. Though worldly success and riches come his way, including a position in the imperial court of Milan, satisfaction and peace elude him. It takes a confrontation with the Christian bishop Ambrose and the countless prayers offered by his patient mother, Monica, to break through his intellectual pride.

Starring Alessandro Preziosi, Monica Guerritore, Johannes Bandrup, and Franco Nero.

I watched this yesterday here in Ottawa... tears just rolled down while I watch this spectacular movie....

    - Saint Augustine just speaks so much about my own fears and incertitudes... God could not send a better saint right now in my life !

Saint Augustine, pray for all of us that we may all find the Truth you found in your lifetime !

"The prayers of the saints that were passed on" = exactly what Catholics mean when we talk about "praying to the saints." The way we do it does not bypass Jesus anymore than when I ask you to pray for me. Please pray for me.

Make sure you're arguing against what Catholics actually believe and not the straw man that I, too, was taught when I was Protestant. God bless you.

Augustine is Christianity. He came from the ruins of Carthage which was so perverse that even the Pagan Romans were shocked.

Alessandro is so intense with his glower-brows shadowing over his piercing blue eyes!!! This movie was thoroughly enjoyable. What a great introduction to this epic saint. Let's all try to tackle his Confessions one page at a time!

  • JenseninBrizo .

i think it would have been more authentic if they had a "darker person" but the message of the story is still there. plus in many areas, there were "whiter" ie certain areas

I think that your Afro-American moron need new brains in your head. Thinking that whole of Africa is BLACK. North Africans are not black and never were black and are also not Europeans. The Berbers live their before your black shit came from Asia in two Africa. Your kidn of Afro-Americans are decdents of slves which were taken form SUNSAHARAN countries to Europe and American slaves marktes. North Africa is region which black African have nothing do with it. From an Moroccan Amazigh(berber)

So Berbers migrated from the British Isles and settled in Africa? Augustine, one the greatest writers in Christianity is African, not European. It's like casting Jeffrey Hunter in the role of Jesus or Charlton Heston as Moses. I believe we need to boycott films that continue to show the ancient world as Anglo Saxon populated cities.

Augustine of Hippo was an Amazigh (Berber) from the Aures mountians in Algeria and the portray them as he was. berbers are not black, only a very small minority which lives in South Moroco and Algeria.

We have a wealth of Black and Middle Eastern actors and it would be very easy to portray this Saint true to his ethnic background. I certainly would not want Morgan Freeman in the part of President George Washington just because he is the best actor the Producer could get. I refuse to see the film or to endorse it.

Actually, to be fair, when I looked on google images, there were a lot of paintings of them both being white.

Truthfully, I don't think race ever entered the producers' minds. It is probable that the actors used were the best for the job.
