A reporter who allegedly helped Marine Capt. Nicanor Faeldon escape from a Makati City luxury hotel during the Nov. 29, 2007 failed rebellion could lead authorities to the hiding place of the fugitive soldier, the chief of the Philippine National Police said Thursday.

Director General Avelino Razon Jr. said this is the reason why the police have yet to identify the reporter.

Razon said the PNP has yet to file a complaint against the media practitioner. He declined to say if the reporter is under surveillance.

Sen. Rodolfo Biazon has called on the PNP to file charges against the reporter if it has strong evidence to prove the journalist's role in Faeldon's escape.

On Wednesday Razon disclosed that footage from The Peninsula Manila takeover showed a media practitioner handing a press identification card to Faeldon and escorting the Marine out of the hotel.

Razon declined to name the reporter, saying that authorities were still studying whether to file a case against the journalist.

On November 29, Trillanes, along with Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim and other soldiers involved in the failed Oakwood mutiny in July 2003 walked out of their hearing to renew calls for the resignation of President Arroyo. The group, joined by civilians, took over the hotel for six hours before surrendering to the police.

Journalists and technical crewmen who covered the incident were also arrested to prevent those involved from escaping by posing as journalists. The arrests were seen as an affront to press freedom, an allegation denied by the authorities.

Trillanes and other renegade soldiers are now facing rebellion charges filed by the government in connection with the failed rebellion while the manhunt for Faeldon continues.
