In the northern province of Salta, along Argentinas longest and oldest road Ruta 40, is the colonial town of Cafayate. Here there are 7 wineries, or bodegas, inside the town limits with several others just outside. We spent four nights here discovering the exceptional flavors of this charming town including its famous torrontes wines, a white wine with Spanish origins.
Visits to the wineries include a very thorough tour and they are free, unlike in Mendoza. Tastings are also complimentary. There is more to the region than just wine crafting. Nearby is the ancient ruins of Quilmes which was settled around 1000 AD by the Diaguit and Calchaqui Indians. They came under the Inca influence in the 15th century and fiercely resisted the Spanish for 130 years before being forced to march to a suburb of Buenos Aires in 1667. On the opposite side of the Quebrada de las Conchas the beautiful polychromatic canyon with tons of bizarre rock formations
Very good place!
