The Empires' 'Magic Mirror', featuring John Barnes on lead, was issued two years before the Whirlin' Disc version with the group named as The Whirlers. The Empires made three records for Harlem ('My Baby', 'Magic Mirror' and 'Somebody Changed The Lock', the latter with the group providing support for Lightnin' Junior) before recording for Mercury. its subsidiary Wing, and Whirlin' Disc.
