AquaClear 50 Review Part 1

A review of the AquaClear 50 power filter (A-610). A very nice filter for up to a 50 gallon aquarium. The filter is setup for 3 stages of filtration. 1. mechanical (foam). 2. chemical (carbon). 3. biological (bio-max).

The pre-filter sponge will also protect the impeller from sand damage.

Hey do you use a fluval edge pre filter? I heard they keep the sand out of the impeller

Yes I do, I added it for a couple of reasons. I have several ghost shrimp in the tank. I also had a newly added guppy and a albino cory cat get stuck on the intake of the AquaClear. Most likely not in good health to start with.

I noticed the flow of the AquaClear slowed a bit and found that the bottom of the foam was coated solid with debris. The pre-filter prevents this now.

I did this review late at night. The lid will actually go on much easier than I show in the video. The filter allows different filter media to be used. Currently my filter is running two foam filters and a biomax. Starting in a couple of weeks, it will be running one foam filter, seachem matrix, and biomax. I plan on using the seachem matrix to help remove organics from the system in the hopes of keeping my nitrates down along with water changes.
