Song: "The Skeleton and the Tailor" - 2:03*
Album: 10,000 Shots (2005)

there once was a wee laddie-o who lived not so very long ago
who had a brother with a heart of gold, they soon grew into men
the younger had never walked, because of this he never had
the brighter view and attitude, curse to live in a wheelie chair

days went by, the story goes, they got the gift for making clothes
shirts and britches, coats and socks, bluses, kilts and hats and socks
one day after closing shop his brother wheeled him for a drop
down at the pub when the locals drink, speaking in low tones

tailor, tailor, all alone in the tavern sewing clothes
tailor, tailor, don't believe in things that walk at night

well he sat there sipping, mended clothes
listening to those who'd never spent the night
beside the stone and graves on haunted hill
he said "Roll me up, we'll make a bet, i'll spend the night all by myself
to prove there ain't no ghosts that haunt the stones on graveyard hill"

tailor, tailor, all alone in the graveyard sewing clothes
tailor, tailor, don't believe in things that walk at night
believe in things that haunt the moonlight

well he sat there in the moonlight, he sat there mending clothes
he was shocked to see a big skeleton standing in the graveyard 10 feet tall
he tried to kill the tailor, but he glanced him smashing stones
he took his flight for his life and walked around for evermore

tailor, tailor, all alone in the graveyard sewing clothes
tailor, tailor, don't believe in things that walk at night
believe in things that haunt the moonlight

  • You got the lyrics wrong. Only the first chorus says "in a tavern sewing cloths". After that he says "in a graveyard sewing cloths."

  • ok thank you. i've corrected it :o

  • I LOVE this because I grew up reading the book "the monster and the tailor." l I found this song last year, and its the same general story concept. I LOVED the book in Elementary school and checked it out of the library every week for like a year or so and then I found this song. Basically an irish punk rock version of a dear story from my youth!

  • Bought the CD. Thanks, mates!

  • @Saber42 It's shirts and britches, coats and smocks.

  • I could be wrong, but I think he says : "the kind of thing that change your life"

  • what is he saying at the very end? after "believe in things that haunt the moonlight"? i can't figure it out

  • @insaninater

    i believe thats called "adrenaline"

  • Got the CD now.Brilliant!

  • god there is something just frikkin magical in the chorus!

  • When he sings

"days went by, the story goes, they got the gift for making clothes

shirts and britches, coats and socks, bluses, kilts and hats and socks"

I think he says "Shirts and britches, coats and SLACKS" I could be wrong but that's the way it sounds to me. Thanks for posting this, I do love The Real Mckenzies.

  • oh your welcome :)
