Southern Star http://www.onlymelbourne.com.au/melbourne_details.php?id=12219 is the ultimate must-do Melbourne experience, the 3rd highest wheel in the world.

Rising almost 120m, around 38 storeys into the air, it boasts some of the most spectacular views over Melbourne and beyond.

  • It's now buggered. Apparently, it buckled in the heat.

It has become art by accident, a monument to the times.

    It's big, flashy, impressive, expensive....

    And totally fucking useless.

  • It is true some bracing members buckled under the extreme heat and will be replaced before the wheel begins operating again. We feel this is unfortunate and can't wait until it gets going again... its a great ride!

  • @jezeats You may think the London Eye is better looking, and your entitled to your opinion however Melbourne still has the beautiful trams only 150 metres away from our observation wheel, we also have better weather and traffic.

  • @jack1000 No Vic government has contributed to this.

  • @3aw77 And what are you?

  • @onlymelbourne Still waiting.... LOL!

  • @3aw77 ING REAL RESTATE built it, not the state government. Try and do some research first. If you go to New Quay ( Waterfront city) and go to the ING Real Estate showroom, there is a model of the area including the wheel and information.

  • This thing is just ugly. If you look at the London Eye, it's beautiful, like a bicycle wheel. This thing is just ugly, like it was built out of a meccano set. The London Eye is a rather light structure, while this thing is heavy. When it opened in 2008, I looked at the ride costs vs the London Eye, the later being cheaper (post currency conversion). They were dreaming to think they could make a crappy copy of the London Eye and charge more for the privilege of riding it.

  • @paddlebomb One month!

  • @onlymelbourne Actually it was a design fault. Heat had little to do with it.

  • an EPIC FAIL..!!! it was constructed, and operated for almost 2months... before it was faulty and started cracking and had to be pulled back down.... millions and millions of dollars for nothing...!!! and the melbourne government will tell you... they only wanted the giant wheel to compete with Sydney for Icons and tourist... when a ferris wheel is useless in any part of australia.... we have too harsh and damatic weather... besides how unoriginal... to copy London or China... EPIC FAIL!!!!

  • The State Government did NOT build this wheel. This is a private project undertaken by ING Real Estate. They own the land and the infrastructure and they'll absorb the losses, not Victoria.
