University of Miami's Jazz Vocal I with the Frost Symphony Orchestra performing Brazilian standard, Mas Que Nada, written by Jorge Ben in 1963. A later cover version became the signature song of Sérgio Mendes. This cover combines both the very well-known Mendes Brasil 66 version and the later cover from 2006 where he (Mendes) re-recorded the song with The Black Eyed Peas and additional vocals by his wife, Gracinha Leporace. Performed at UM Gusman Concert Hall on March 18, 2008, the concert was a benefit for WDNA 88.9 FM Serious Jazz and the UM Frost School of Music. Frost Jazz Vocal Ensemble I is comprised of twelve vocalists and rhythm section (Dan Strange - piano, Greg Byers - bass, Ellison Smith - guitar, and Victor Gonzalez - drums) directed by Larry Lapin. Concertmaster of the Frost Symphony Orchestra is Ashley Liberty. Arrangement and conducting the Frost Symphony Orchestra is by Dan Williams.

Video and original notes (above) by and special thanks to Jazz aficionado, Doaldo Caballero.

  • What a great performance. Great singers and players all...and I love the arrangement colliding the original Brazil 66 version with the Sergio Mendes and Black Eyed Peas version. Very skillful, and nice job on the video. When it first loaded I assumed it would be a "mic in the back of the aud" type of recording...what a treat to hear it from a board and in stereo. Thank-You!!! Wouldn't mind getting an MP3 of this myself!

Thanks for the nice comments! The original video was taken and posted by Doaldo Caballero, a fan in the audience that I still have not met (though we correspond). I mixed the raw tracks at home and managed to recover some buried layers in the live performance. Message me your e-mail, and I'll send you the mp3.

  • One of the best music programs in the country, top 15

  • cool and sexy

  • brilliant. the only word I can think of haha. it's pretty amazing how you've taken something so classy like jazz and fused it with rap (which has its own class!) to make it a whole different genre. amazing. wonderful.

  • OOooo a little one note samba in sung in there? me likes but i think the vocalists we a little tacky. hip hop though??? why? whatever the kids had fun so i wont be an over critical prick.

  • Amazing!
