This is part of a series of demonstrations of the use of (Yi) Intention by John Painter at the 2006 A Taste of China Teachers demonstrations.

Please be aware that this is not magic or Qi it is a simple demonstration of how to lead the intention and energy of another person through touch. Anyone can learn to do this in a short time if the person can understand how the technique works. It is very useful for internal martial arts to teach students how to become relaxed (song) enough yet still be able to touch and sense the movements of others so as to lead instead of attempting to control.

This can have martial implications for real combat but not immediately. This demo was done with audience members who are not students of Dr. Painter with the exception of the young man receiving the one inch palm strikes.

Yi Xin Gong Quan is the name given to the methods of using Yi to produce internal power skill (Nei Jin-gong) developed by Dr. John Painter from the teachings of the Li family. The methods are similar to the art of Yiquan in many aspects with the exception that after years of study of neurology, psychology and human kinetics Dr. Painter has devised a new and innovative way of training these methods for himself and his students. They begin with seated meditation, move to standing forms and then to moving forms.

Scientific research has shown that the methods employed by Dr. Painter in Yi Xin Gong will actually increase muscle strength, size, speed and power throughout the entire body by the means of visualizations used during the standing practice.

All reactions of participants in this demonstration are spontaneous and are the result of mind body intention and are not Qi or mystically related to magical prowess of any kind. For more information on learning Yi Xin Gong contact:

  • Dear Ophachew,

In my opinion almost all of the people who talk trash about our work have never experienced it first hand. I do not really care what they say as long as they spell our name correctly. People with a real interest will check it out for themselves first hand and not follow gossip mongers.

    Thanks

    John Painter

  • Thanks for uploading: I am working on the hypothesis: 'energy follows intention'

  • This is correct. Intention the desire to do something activates the neural pathways from brain to muscle in such a way that they harmoniously coordinate to create whole body entrained energy. The mind commands, the body reacts and the (Qi) energy goes along.

  • Dear Friend,

The internal martial arts are for large, medium or small people. The myth put out by some says that the small slight non-strong person can strike harder than a large strong person is just that a myth. Even the small person can knock a big man down if he understands angle and proper body mechanics. The problem comes in when you start to believe in magical thinking like Qi will do it. Internal is a science not magic.

  • Dear Friend,

Thanks but absolutely NO MAGIC here just an understanding of how to manipulate the mind and body in a very subtle way.

  • Mr. Painter, I have read quite a bit of your writings over the years, and am a great admirer of your knowledge. I have a question , which style would you recommend to a begginer? Tai Chi, Pa Kua, or Hsing -I?

  • Dear Friend,

This depends on what your mind and body require. In other words you should experience all of these first hand and then let your heart tell you what it desires.

  • John, this is an awesome example of explaining and exemplifying taking listening energy and taking the path of least resistance : The way of heaven being the path of least resistance and the way of earth being forces in opposition. You dissapated energy with a peaceful restoration of harmony as the forces were disrupting that state of being. It was beautiful to watch the forces dissapate. Thank you I have learned from this vid.... Stier Sifu has mentioned you... be well

  • please look at Cheng Man Ching. He was known to have been sickly before he took up taichi. He was a very well known Wu Style Tai Chi teacher.

  • great vid!! thks

  • I'm on Dr. Painter's blog and the daily Chans are really great. I know that Dr. P has his critics when it comes to his linage, but i just talked to a guy that declared although Dr. P is a outstanding fighter an he wouldn't want to tangle with Dr. P in a dead end alley at midnight. He also said that Bagua is an internal style but Dr. P practices and teaches Bagua as an external style?

  • has anyone ever noticed all these internal masters are extremely large, larger than the average man. doesn't that make it easier for them to fa jin and defeat everyone around them. i thought internal martial arts were supposed to be for the smaller guy but i have never seen one small master with convincing fajin or power. all their fajin demonstrations are on much smaller guys, look at bruce kumar, wang shu jin, hung i hsiang and the gompa guy.

  • Perfect use of the body. Shows others that using your shoulders to do all the work doesnt work. you must use the whole body. Hips and wist play a good role in it. Thank you for the video *Bows*
