the irish people did not ratify the treaty, all the treaty did was make a provision for a 26 county general election.

At 1:51 the video claims the IRA 'captured and killed' JJ 'Ginger' O'Connell in the Four Courts leaving Collins with 'no option' but to start the civil war. The truth is O'Connell wasn't killed by the IRA in 1922, he died in 1944, 20 years later.

@cally982 Thanks a lot! You just saved my research :)

really good work, i wonder why the government of Ireland act of 1920 is not generally remembered when talking about partition... it was fairly impossible to get the 32 county from the start...
miss communication, its all it was...

@padraigomairtin oh yeah, no you're right.

@lynottlives I agree but this was long after the event. Northern Ireland was barely mentioned in the Dail debates. The big usses were the oath and the King of England as head of state and it is these two issues that led to civil war not partition.

@padraigomairtin you're correct in saying that it was already decided previously, but dev's followers would have seen the treaty as making this permanent.. a rather thin argument, but there ya go.
pleasepleaseplease! do you by any chance have the source of this vid? Title, direction, year.. that sort of stuff? I really need it.

@winter7night This is a short video I created myself, Ciaran O'Callaghan. The title is the same and it was created in 2009. The pictures are all taken for the cork multitext project which I had permission to use and the music is Lux Athena by Clint Mansell.
