Rep. Filner and Rep. Wilson on U.S. Policy Toward Iraq

During C-SPAN's September 24th, 2002 Washington Journal program, Representative Bob Filner (D-CA) and Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) talked about U.S. policy toward Iraq and congressional resolutions on the issue. Representative Wilson serves on the House Armed Services Committee and is in favor of U.S. military action against Iraq. Representative Filner is opposed to the President's policy on Iraq and is a co-sponsor of a resolution calling for the U.S. to work with the U.N. to "ensure Iraq is not developing weapons of mass destruction" through weapons inspections and "other peaceful means."

Ok, as a history teacher I can tell you that the US did supply Iraq with weapons during the Iraq-Iran war in the 1980's. (Under Regan, Bush senior) Were they WMDs? Depends on the many definitions of the phrase. The weapons supplied were RPGs, bombs, small arms, AND weapons of the biological sort. The use of biological weapons by both Iraq and Iran maimed an entire generation of soldiers.

So, did the US supply weapons to Iraq? Yes. Is WIlson incorrect in his statement? Yes.

Even if he reviewed all of his public debates, his worldview wouldn't allow him to recognize his own faults. What I think is that, first, this entire conversation is about the conflicts occurring in the Middle East. Therefore, all of these things are current, and "never" refers to this time span.

Second, I think that it is completely ridiculous to accuse him of not knowing what happened in Vietnam because this entire conversation was a fast-paced argument. It just isn't truly logical to make an argument stating political correctness in this situation.
