I"ve never really seen anything of Patti Lupone before but I have heard of her. She is AMAZING, I wish I had seen her in this play. Thank you for the post. Was this ever a movie?
i prefer this ending because the other one just seems like Louise thinks "she's just going to keep leeching off of me and that 'dream' will become a reality."
I mean i agree with everyone that this particular ending practically makes the show so powerful, and in a way i like it, but i just feel so bad for poor Mama Rose, and its even sadder when she's running around the stage reaching for the sign. Such an amazing musical. One of Arthur Laurents best works and of course WEST SIDE STORY
This ending is appropriate for the theater -- It's dramatic and artistic. I love it. It wouldn't have interpreted well on-screen, though. The directors made good choices.
This is such a heartbreaking scene in my opinion.

@angelsolaris23 Yes. The original movie was made in 1962. Starring one of my favorites, Natalie Wood as Louise and Rosalind Russel as Rose. :D

That's what makes it so incredible and powerful. Sadly, that's how life is

I remember seeing this in the theatre. It's just as devastating as it was then. This ending affects me so much.
