Tom Waits' beautiful song, 'Martha', from his 1973 debut album Closing Time. There are dozens of covers of this song on Youtube, but none come close to the original. So we shall see how long this clip lasts.

  • Tom Waits is a genious on writing this masterpiece, nothing less ..! Every adult can relate in some way to his 'martha' . We all have a 'martha' somewhere, don't we ..? I always think of my 'martha' listening to this and sometimes I look her up on facebook, but I haven't heard her for 10 years and I'm afraid to make 'live' contact, but here, with this song, she's with me for 4:32 minutes .. I still love you, my 'martha' ..

  • Skizzy Mars has great taste in music

  • I just miss her.

  • @leetusername Couldn't agree with you more seems a little pathetic....

  • I love Tom and the meaning behind this song but why do you guys have to share your experiences in comments? It just seems like a giant cry for attention...20 years ago that would have been something you told 1 or two people.

  • This was the first Tom Waits album I bought and I have always loved this awesome song. Nobody sings this as well as Tom does.

  • In my early twenties, (a couple of decades ago) in between listening to the Ramones and Suicidal Tendencies, my girlfriend and I would lay in the hammock together and listen to this album and, in our naieve-ness, talk about how glad we were that this would never happen to us. Haven't heard from her in twenty years. I wonder if she ever thinks of me. I miss her. Hell, I miss the me I used to be. What the f**k happened?

  • @daithiard Every artist's work stems from their previous work all the way back to the tunes they hummed to themselves in the back seat of their parents cars on long drives. Certainly if no one liked his first album he wouldn't have gotten a second. Because of that I'm glad they did. The Heart of Saturday Night is certainly an improvement, especially lyrically.

  • @ChristianCChristian You're lucky you were but just because they were others like him doesn't negate my point. Closing time is still his debut, his breakout, put a marker down and his style developed from that. His later stuff may be more eclectic, but saying Closing Time is boring is too far, his flow, style lyrics all stem from this album

  • ''don't worry about the cost''

  • @savvas350 I can imagine it is ..

  • @bonavox11 Imagine what is happening when the name of your "Martha" is actually Martha...That makes the song really intense for me...
