John Perkins, author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, relates the story of his daughter choosing to pay triple for a baby crib because it was made in Canada with plantation trees, rather than one made in China by sweetshop workers. "It costs a little more to make these investments," he says, "but they are investments."

-----

Economic hit man John Perkins has confessed the sins of predatory politicians and analyzed the reasons for the current meltdown. A reformed economist, he warns that returning to our "normal" blueprints for the global economy would prove disastrous. Perkins details the steps to transform "the mutant form of capitalism" into a system based on sustainability and justice. - Commonwealth Club

John Perkins spent three decades as an Economic Hit Man, business executive, author, and lecturer. He lived and worked in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and North America. Then he made a decision: he would use these experiences to make the planet a better place for his daughter's generation. Today he teaches about the importance of rising to higher levels of consciousness, to waking up - in both spiritual and physical realms - and is a champion for environmental and social causes. He has lectured at universities on four continents, including Harvard, Wharton, and Princeton.

  • The problem is that these people believe that the cost for the foreign "unsafe" product is justified and therefore are 'forced' to pay the incredibly inflated price of the domestic "safe" product. Want to solve this problem? Stop buying the garbage that you don't need! There are so many people out there crying and whining about debts and how broke they are and yet own a 46' plasma TV, a $3000 sofa, eat out 5 times a week, have a $35,000 car and are paying $80 / week in gas, etc. etc.

  • He seems to be talking about an investement, not here and now, atleast thats what I took from this. Shun that behaviour now, and in 5-10-15 years down the road, there will be no chance for sweat shops to thrive. Of course this does seem optimistic, but there is nothing wrong with putting it out there.

  • I will sell her a crib made in USA for 399.00, such a deal...and by the way Man Made Global Warming is a SCAM!

The earth has been cycling thru climatic highs and lows all without MAN's influence. Do some more research into the SUN re: weather and climate. The United Nations Lies are all famous by now - please get a clue.

  • bullshit, wrong wrong wrong

you mearly deny the people in the sweatshops the ability to eat

  • You couldn't afford it in the first place, but 'wanted' a plasma TV from Walmart? Walmart is bringing down America like a plague...by simply giving the illusion to average folks that you 'need' that plasma TV. Walmart is a community killer.

  • the most sustainable thing to do is make the crib yourself, out of scavenged building materials. Do It Yourself is the greatest investment. i appreciate Perkins for blowing the whistle, but not for recognizing the dangers of global capitalism.

  • By not buying that 200$ crib, you're depriving that "slave" from their wage. Thinking you can change the production (or the world) by boycotts is idealist.

  • Yeah great lets make these "investments" with our fiat money... the money is whats keeps people in sweat shops... and we are all aboard the citizenSHIP and our "Person" only has access to the type of money... wake up its deeper than just making Investments... keep thinking john, keep thinking. your message is half-assed.

  • Hello no! I choose the chinese slave labor. I love cheap electronics and cheap toys. Screw you guys, I'm going with red china!!!!

  • I would agree with this if I had a lot of money. I don't and wanting a Plasma TV I went to Walmart and was looking at the low end $500 tv and really couldn't afford that. Fortunely they had a customer return, just a tiny problem with the base & they had it for $260. I could afford that.

Point being is this is great to spend more if you have the luxury of excess money. I don't so I have to find the best deal I can.

  • do you no where our taxes go?
