Equibot balances using just two wheels and a single infrared sensor to estimate how far it's leaning over. It uses an Atmel AVR microcontroller running a simple PID controller to keep it upright. Total cost was probably under $150.

  • The IR sensor is made by Sharp. It outputs a voltage related to the distance to target. There's no circuit besides two wires connecting the sensor to the ADC on the microcontroller.
