Controversial philosopher Peter Singer discusses the 1980s case of Jessica McClure, the little girl who fell down a well, and who today has a sizeable trust fund from the many donations she received--even though the money was not needed for her rescue. In the two days she was in the well, according to UNICEF's figures over 50,000 children died of avoidable poverty-related causes. Who do we have an obligation to help?
This Carnegie Council event took place on March 18, 2009. For the full video, audio, and go to http://www.cceia.org

  • @kjsdyggf Poorer people generally have more children.

  • In most cases if you give charity to humans they'll just keep on selfishly breeding. Which will lead to worsening global warming, overpopulation and a strain on resources.

Systems need to be changed, not individuals.

  • @noxaj1976 actually that quote is not Stalin's, and he probably never even quoted it himself. There is nothing particularly harsh about the quote anyway; the perception is true, for better or worse.

  • @OpenFormula I know it's hard to imagine, but Stalin said "one death is a tragedy, one MILLION is a statistic".

  • One death is a tragedy, one thousand is a statistic Stalin
